When Rest Has to Become a Priority

Today was supposed to be my day to rest.

I had planned for it. I needed it. I was actually looking forward to it.

For the past several days, I've been running on empty, and I could feel it.

Looking back, it's probably why I was craving comfort food the other day.

It wasn't just about cookies or a warm meal in the crockpot.

I think my body was asking for nourishment-both physically and emotionally.

Even my Oura app agreed. My sleep debt had climbed to over five hours, and it kept reminding me that recovery was overdue.

But then life happened.

Someone needed help.

And because that's who I am, I said yes.

I told myself it was just one more day. I could rest later.

Everything worked out, and I'll still get my chance to recover.

But as I was thinking about it today, something hit me.

This is what so many caregivers do.

We push through exhaustion.

We tell ourselves someone else needs us more.

We convince ourselves that one more day won't matter.

Until one more day becomes another... and another... and another.

The hard part is that choosing rest can feel uncomfortable.

It can bring guilt.

It can make us worry that we're letting someone down or not doing enough.

But here's what I'm learning:

Rest isn't selfish.

It's maintenance.

It's stewardship.

It's how we make sure we have something left to give tomorrow.

Our bodies were never designed to run on empty indefinitely.

They give us warning signs for a reason-fatigue, brain fog, irritability, cravings, difficulty concentrating. They're not signs of weakness. They're invitations to slow down before we're forced to.

Sometimes the most responsible thing we can do isn't pushing harder.

Sometimes it's honoring what our body is asking for.

The people who love us will survive if we take a day to recover.

The dishes can wait.

The emails can wait.

Even some opportunities can wait.

Our health shouldn't always be the thing that does.

So, if you're reading this while running on empty, consider this your reminder.

The world will keep spinning if you rest.

And when you come back, you'll have so much more of yourself to give.

Today I didn't keep the promise I made to myself to rest.

Tomorrow, I will.
