When Life Gives You Overripe Bananas...

I had a few bananas sitting on the counter that were getting a little too ripe to eat on their own, and I wasn't about to let them go to waste.
At the same time, I've been feeling like I might be coming down with something.
Maybe it's allergies. Maybe it's the beginning of a summer cold.
You know that feeling, when your sinuses feel congested, your head feels a little heavy, and you're hoping it doesn't turn into anything more.
So instead of letting those bananas go bad, I decided to throw together a smoothie with a few ingredients I already had at home.
Ginger Hydrator Smoothie
Ingredients
½ HEB Smoothie Hydrator packet
1 banana
¼ cup orange juice (or your favorite juice)
¼ cup vanilla yogurt (Greek yogurt works well too)
1 teaspoon fresh or ground ginger
1 teaspoon honey
Directions
Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. If you'd like it colder or thicker, add a handful of ice before blending.
Why Ginger?
Ginger has been used for centuries and is one of those ingredients I like to keep around because it's simple, affordable, and versatile.
While it isn't a cure for a cold or allergies, research suggests ginger may help support your body in a few ways:
May help calm inflammation. Ginger contains natural compounds called gingerols that have anti-inflammatory properties.
May help support your body's response to congestion. While it won't "clear" your sinuses, some people find that ginger's warming properties and anti-inflammatory effects help them feel a little more comfortable when they're dealing with sinus pressure.
May help settle the stomach. Ginger is well known for helping with nausea or an upset stomach.
Provides antioxidants. These compounds help protect your body's cells from everyday stress.
Pairs well with honey. Honey adds natural sweetness and is a comforting addition to homemade drinks and smoothies.
Why I Added the Other Ingredients
Banana adds natural sweetness, potassium, and makes the smoothie extra creamy.
Orange juice provides vitamin C and a bright, refreshing flavor.
Vanilla yogurt adds creaminess along with protein and probiotics.
Honey balances the slight spice of the ginger.
HEB Smoothie Hydrator gives it an extra hydration boost, especially helpful during these hot Texas days.
A Gentle Reminder
I love recipes like this because they remind me that caring for ourselves doesn't always have to be complicated.
Sometimes it's simply using the bananas before they go bad.
Sometimes it's taking five minutes to make something nourishing instead of skipping breakfast.
Sometimes it's listening to your body when it tells you it needs a little extra care.
As caregivers, parents, and people who spend so much of our time taking care of everyone else, it's easy to put ourselves at the bottom of the list. We tell ourselves we'll rest later, eat later, or take care of ourselves after everyone else's needs are met.
But we matter, too.
Making a smoothie won't solve everything, but it can be one small act of caring for yourself. Those small choices, drinking enough water, eating something nourishing, stepping outside for a few minutes, or simply slowing down—can add up over time.
So, if you're feeling a little run down today, maybe this is your reminder to pause for a few minutes. Blend something nourishing, take a deep breath, and remember that taking care of yourself isn't selfish.
It's one of the ways you stay strong enough to continue caring for the people you love.
