I Wasn't Cooking for the Weather

This morning, I could feel the anxiety beginning to settle in.

Not panic.

Just that quiet feeling that starts whispering all the things I should be doing.

The laundry.

The work.

The projects.

The emails.

The endless mental checklist that never really seems to end.

I almost let that feeling take over.

But instead of immediately jumping into productivity mode, I stopped and asked myself a different question.

"What do I need today?"

The answer came almost immediately.

A crockpot meal.

Chocolate chip cookies.

So that's exactly what I did.

Never mind the fact that it's the middle of a Texas summer.

I put beef stew in the crockpot.

Then I started browning butter and mixing up cookie dough.

If someone had walked into my kitchen, they probably would've wondered why I was making the coziest fall menu imaginable while it was blazing hot outside.

But here's what I realized...

I wasn't cooking for the weather.

I was cooking for my heart.

Sometimes we become so focused on everything waiting for us that we forget to check in with ourselves.

Not...

"What needs to get done?"

But...

"What do I actually need?"

Not what everyone else needs.

Not what the calendar says.

Not what the to-do list demands.

What does my heart need today?

Today, the answer was comfort.

As the mental list kept growing, I remember telling myself...

Just one step at a time.

Only work on what's in front of you.

You're allowed to rest.

So, I stopped thinking about everything else.

I browned the butter.

I mixed the dough.

I scooped the cookies.

I filled the crockpot.

I simply worked on what was right in front of me.

One step became the next.

Before long, the smell of warm cookies filled the kitchen, the stew was quietly simmering, and I realized I wasn't thinking about my to-do list anymore.

My mind had finally grown quiet.

Maybe that's what finding calm looks like sometimes, not having fewer responsibilities, but choosing to be fully present with the one thing right in front of you.

Nothing on my to-do list disappeared.

But something inside me changed.

And honestly... maybe that's enough for today.

Now let's talk about these cookies...

They absolutely did not disappoint.

I tried the Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe from In Fine Taste, and I honestly don't think I've ever made chocolate chip cookies that came out quite so perfectly round. They baked up thick, soft, buttery, and loaded with chocolate chips, almost like they came straight from a bakery.

In fact...

These aren't "grab one on your way out the door" cookies.

These are put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, drizzle it with chocolate syrup, and sit down for a few minutes' kind of cookies.

Worth every single bite.

If you'd like to try them yourself, here's the recipe:

Today reminded me that self-care doesn't always have to look like a vacation or a spa day.

Sometimes it looks like asking yourself a simple question.

"What do I need today?"

Today, my answer was simple.

A crockpot meal.

Chocolate chip cookies.

A reminder to take life one step at a time.

To only work on what was in front of me.

To remember that I'm allowed to rest.

And somewhere between the smell of beef stew and warm cookies, I found exactly what I needed.

Not because I finished everything on my list...

But because, for a little while, I stopped letting the list define my day.

Maybe tomorrow the list will still be there.

But so will the reminder that I can slow down, take the next step, and choose what my heart needs instead of letting anxiety make the decisions.

I'd love to hear from you...

Have you ever found yourself making a meal that had nothing to do with the season and everything to do with what your heart needed?

Or maybe it's not a meal at all.

What's one simple thing that helps you find a little calm when life starts to feel overwhelming? 💛
