Five Pieces of Laundry

This weekend, I caught myself doing something different.

I wasn't trying to finish the laundry.

I was giving myself grace.

Instead of looking at the pile of clothes and telling myself it all had to be finished before I could move on, I folded two pieces of clothing. That's it.

Then I went and did something else.

Later, I came back, folded three more pieces, put those away, and moved on again.

A few months ago, I probably would have criticized myself for that.

"Just finish it."

"Why can't you get one simple task done?"

But this weekend, something felt different.

I realized I wasn't failing.

I was simply working with the life I actually have, not the life I keep imagining I should have.

And then I started wondering...

What even is "normal"?

Who decided what a productive day is supposed to look like?

Who decided folding an entire basket in one sitting was somehow better than folding five pieces throughout the day?

When did I start measuring my life against someone else's version of normal?

Because when I really stop and think about it, my days don't look like they used to.

Therapy appointments.

Phone calls.

Text messages.

Caregiving.

Meals.

Work squeezed into the quiet moments.

Unexpected interruptions that aren't really interruptions, they're just part of my life.

If I'm honest, my life is probably 95% unlike the version of "normal" I've been trying to live up to.

So why am I still expecting myself to function like someone whose life looks completely different from mine?

And maybe that's why something else has started changing too.

This year, I've come to terms with mowing my yard every other week.

For the longest time, I felt like it had to be done every week because that's what I thought I was supposed to do.

But every week meant I was exhausted, trying to squeeze one more thing into a life that was already full.

But every other week?

That's realistic.

That's comfortable.

That's a rhythm I can actually sustain.

Maybe giving myself grace isn't lowering the bar.

Maybe it's finally accepting the life I'm actually living.

Maybe I'll fold five pieces of laundry today and a few more tomorrow.

Maybe the yard gets mowed every other week.

Maybe some things take longer than they used to.

That doesn't mean I'm failing.

It means my life looks different.

Maybe my life will never look "normal."

Maybe it wasn't supposed to.

Maybe God never asked me to finish every load of laundry in one sitting.

Maybe He simply asked me to be faithful with today.

And maybe...

five pieces of laundry were enough.

Where in your life could you give yourself a little more grace this week?
